Gig-Hub Micro Internship Program

Gig-Hub provides a unique opportunity for businesses to access talent and support without the financial burden of hiring traditional interns by connecting them with Davidson students for short-term projects.

Gig-Hub operates in alignment with Davidson College’s academic calendar, with student consultants available to work on projects during the following time frames each year:

Fall Semester: September-November
Spring Semester: February-April
Summer Break: June-August

What do Gig-Hub Consultants Offer?

Davidson students bring a dynamic and fresh approach to projects due in part to their liberal arts education. A liberal arts education encourages students to see connections that result in new ideas for your projects. • Financial modeling for growth stage companies
  • Database development to track client interactions

A general researcher may be asked to determine market size for a product or service, broken down by demographic or geographic categories, or current market share for competitors.

Sample Gigs:

  • Market research to determine product viability
  • Internet searches on competitors, surveying and interviewing potential customers
  • Scholarly research to assist with publications

Good marketing requires strong communication and design skills, along with an intuitive sense for how to get the right message to the target audience. Students will utilize Adobe Creative Suite and Canva for online designs as well as various outreach channels to reach your target market.

Sample Gigs:

  • Logo design for use for print and web materials
  • Design Facebook ads to boost social media presence
  • Search engine optimization
  • Organize social media content calendar

Startups that are just getting off the ground need help on everything: from strategy to marketing to data analysis. Work is often driven by the company’s highest priorities, not necessarily specific job titles/functions within a team.

Sample Gigs:

  • Outreach to new customers
  • Researching various state laws and regulations
  • Organizing documents
  • Creating on-line presentations to pitch investors

Companies are always looking to expand their markets, and this often means doing business in the global marketplace. Applicants are encouraged to submit writing samples in all languages for which they wish to be considered.

Sample Gigs:

  • Translating a business letter, web site, or documents
  • Live translations
  • Blog posts on company’s international website

Whether you are telling a story or selling a product, the visual arts can bring the process to life. Some projects will have very specific requirements for the work to be produced, others will have more space for the Gig-Hub consultant to express creativity.

Sample Gigs:

  • Product promotion video
  • Editing multiple videos to one
  • Company headshots or event documentation
  • Documentation of company history

Every company, every organization, and every professional needs a web presence. Project descriptions will define the design, performance, technology and hosting requirements for the site, based on your needs as the client.

Sample Gigs:

  • Website design utilizing WordPress, Wix, Weebly, Shopify, Drupal
  • Full-stack development
  • Programming in Python, Java, or another high-level language

WHAT TO expect

PAYMENT

Student consultants are hired as employees of Davidson College, so the college takes care of the paperwork and taxes. You’ll receive a monthly invoice based on the actual hours worked by the student on your project. This will be calculated using a standard hourly rate.

Tech Impact Fund

Through generous support from Whitney A. White, Davidson Belk Scholar ‘08 founder of Afara Global, creator of Take Back Your Time and co-founder of Equity Commons, the Hurt Hub has offered women and minority-owned businesses over 2,600 hours of pro bono Gig-Hub consultant time. We can offer up to 30 hours of pro bono work per company for those that identify as an underrepresented founder / business owner.

Are You a Nonprofit?

If you are a non-profit or public-sector organization seeking to collaborate with Davidson on projects, you are eligible for pro bono assistance through the college’s Center for Civic Engagement. To learn more about their offerings and services, contact the CCE or submit your project request here.

TIMING

Students typically work 5 hours per week over 8 weeks, for a total of 40 hours per project. If your project will require more time, you may hire multiple student consultants to split the work.

STRUCTURE

Projects should be able to be completed remotely, or using a hybrid model of some in-person training or meeting at the Hurt Hub combined with tasks to be completed remotely.
