“Give items a second life” is the motto that inspired Henry Russell ’26 to start Campus Swap.
Henry Russell ’26 is a senior at Davidson College, majoring in Physics. The idea for a college move-out company first emerged while he was studying abroad in Australia during a call with one of his best friends from home. Henry has always enjoyed brainstorming business ideas, but this particular one stuck. He became determined to find a solution to the issue of college move-out waste. It wasn’t until he returned from studying abroad that he was able to hit the ground running.
Campus Swap is a service that helps college students move out by collecting their items and storing them at a retail location until they are sold. The environmental impact of Campus Swap is significant, as many of these items would otherwise end up in landfills. Through sustainable pop-up stores, Henry is transforming discarded dorm essentials into affordable finds. Henry picks up items from students and transports them to a location to be sold. Henry offers two deals for students: They can either pay the $15 pick up fee and get 50% of the profits from their items or get their items picked up for free and receive 20% of the profits.
From collecting and selling TVs to mini fridges to futons, Campus Swap gives these items a second life while creating value for students who use the service. Students not only save time and money during the hectic move-out season, but they can also earn money from items they would have otherwise thrown away.
Henry was inspired to apply for The Hurt Hub@Davidson’s Avinger Impact Fund to help accelerate his business forward. He was eager to implement the feedback he had received and continue developing Campus Swap in the right direction. After receiving this funding, Henry was able to take Campus Swap’s marketing efforts to the next level. Additionally, he began working with a mentor to help guide him through the entrepreneurial process. The advice and support that Henry has received from the Hurt Hub has given him and his business the opportunity to grow and flourish.
Looking ahead, Henry hopes to expand Campus Swap to other college campuses. With support from the funding, he is planning to visit UNC-Chapel Hill this year to deliver a full marketing pitch to students. This summer, he aims to collect around 2,000 items as he continues refining the system behind the business. By donating an item to Campus Swap, students can keep it out of a landfill while giving someone else the opportunity to discover a new treasure.
Henry wants to emphasize his gratitude for his family, friends, and mentors for supporting and believing in him as he workshopped and created Campus Swap. While he admits that running a business alongside his coursework has sometimes felt like taking a fifth class, he reflects on the experience by saying, “It’s the most fun homework I have.” Balancing multiple responsibilities and a business is no easy task, but Henry encourages anyone exploring an idea to “go until failure” and to not be afraid to share it with others. You never know the impact an idea might have.
