Jack Berlin ’27: Bringing Music From Campus to Community

Written by Davidson College student, Trang Dang ‘27

Jack Berlin has always been passionate about music, not just creating sounds, but expressing his story through songs. With a strong voice and a gift for lyrical storytelling, Jack has long envisioned a future as a full-time artist. Thanks to support from the Try It Fund and the Hurt Hub@Davidson, that dream has begun to take shape.

While Jack’s strengths lie in singing and songwriting, he knew building a music career required more than this. After winning Try It Fund, he was able to utilize the grant to hire experienced guitarists to help him learn and improve his own guitar skills. At the same time, he’s been actively connecting with creatives across Charlotte, immersing himself in the local music scene and laying the groundwork for a sustainable artistic journey. Entrepreneurship does not mean doing everything alone; it’s about recognizing when to seek support and building the right team to fuel your growth.

Since then, Jack has been producing more music and sharing it on Instagram, even earning a feature on the popular cltiscreative page, a well-known organization with 41.3K followers that highlights and connects Charlotte’s creative artists and entrepreneurs.

Jack’s journey shines with his willingness to engage with the community, create meaningful impact, and grow through every experience. It’s clear he’s embodying the artistic spirit of a true musician.

“It is an extremely difficult industry to be successful in,” he reflects, “but the Try It Fund has allowed me some of the resources necessary to take the first steps in the process.”

And those steps are just the beginning.

Looking ahead, Jack is focused on forming a more permanent team of dedicated musicians and preparing to release music on Spotify and other platforms in 2025. Will Jack cultivate a dedicated fanbase for himself? Could we one day see him return to Davidson’s campus, taking the stage at the annual Frolics spring concert as a featured artist with a crowd singing along to his lyrics? The Hurt Hub is excited to see what the bright future holds for Jack and support him  along this path towards realizing his dreams. Jack embodies what happens when talent meets support and vision meets opportunity.

The Try It Fund has been made possible through generous support from the Charlie Hinnant ’72 Fund, Davidson alums, and other community sponsors. Annelise Hawgood ’27: Painting Her Way Into Entrepreneurship With Art by Ann

Written by Davidson College student, Trang Dang ‘27

Entrepreneurial drive and creative passion intersect beautifully in the story of
Art by Ann.

As the Merchandise Director of Warner Hall, one of the unique Greek life associations – eating houses at Davidson College, and an artist with a heart full of purpose, Annelise Hawgood has been selling her artwork on Instagram for the past three years. But this year, with support from the Try It Fund and the Hurt Hub@Davidson, she took a major leap forward, officially forming Art by Ann as an LLC, opening an online store, and launching an art show at Summit Basecamp.

Annelise’s standout strength, and a key reason she became a Try It Fund recipient, is her remarkable initiative. She approached her business launch with a well-thought-out plan, from opening an LLC with a business bank account, obtaining a website domain, building out Shopify, buying framing and art materials, to developing content marketing strategies.

The funding continues to support her growing business, recently covering expenses for new business cards and art prints as she prepares for her upcoming gallery show in Cincinnati. Along the way, Annelise has learned the importance of embracing every step of the entrepreneurial process. “I understand that this takes time, but I want to prioritize my own agency in Art by Ann,” she shared. That’s exactly what she’s done, taking charge of her vision and building something that’s authentically hers.

And one of the most rewarding parts of this journey? Building self-confidence. “I’ve contemplated opening my own official business, but I was so daunted by the process; part of me thought it was reserved for business and finance majors,” Annelise admitted. Now, she’s not only seeing increased engagement and a growing follower base on Instagram, but she’s also expanding her offerings to include prints and stickers of her work.

Perhaps most meaningfully, the Try It Fund has given Annelise’s business the flexibility to give back to causes she believes in. Between donating her works for Student Government’s Asheville Hurricane Relief Fundraiser and Warner’s Red and Black Ball Fundraiser—supporting RAIN Carolina and Mwandi Mission Hospital—her art raised over $700 last year. “Just realizing this fills me up with so much gratitude and pride for my business,” Annelise reflected.

The Hurt Hub@Davidson is proud to support many student businesses that often begin as personal interests. When students build something close to their heart, they bring the passion, perseverance, and drive needed to create something lasting and impactful for the community.

Reflecting on this opportunity, Annelise shared, “Each step of this process has proved to be a labor of love, but I’ve also found fulfillment in knowing that I’m finally able to elevate my painting practice to a business.” With summer ahead, she’s excited to see what more she can accomplish with additional time to dedicate to her growing venture.

That’s the mission of the Try It Fund: empowering students to turn ideas into action, build confidence, and grow through trial, error, and success. If you are interested you can check out more of Annelise’s art by following her art Instagram account.

Community Partnership in Action: Davidson Housing Coalition Teams Up with Elite Roof and Solar

The Hurt Hub@ Davidson’s mission of fostering organic connections between member companies came to life this year through a meaningful collaboration between Elite Roof and Solar and the Davidson Housing Coalition. This partnership exemplifies how our coworking community creates natural opportunities for local businesses to support important community initiatives.

Improving Housing for Davidson Families

The Davidson Housing Coalition recently undertook a comprehensive capital improvements project at The Bungalows on Jetton Street, updating and repairing all 32 affordable rental units. As part of this initiative, Elite Roof and Solar completed the replacement of eight original roofs dating back to 2000, along with installing appropriate guttering and gutter guards.

“Mick, Ross, and Jake offered us the most complete, professional assessment we’d received for the proposed scope of work,” shared Connie Wessner, Executive Director of Davidson Housing Coalition. “They were careful to make sure we understood not only what they were proposing but why. They met with our residents to explain the process and answer questions. And they did what they said they’d do. On time, on budget.”

The Power of Local Partnership

This collaboration highlights the importance of community-centered business relationships. As Wessner noted, “We value working with local contractors and suppliers because our work is for and on behalf of the Davidson community. Partnership is what makes it possible to tackle the constraints and inequities in the housing market. We’re always better off when we can work as neighbors.”

Elite Roof and Solar echoed this sentiment, stating: “Elite Roof and Solar highly values partnerships with local organizations like the Davidson Housing Coalition that are dedicated to serving our community. This collaboration allows us to contribute to safe, comfortable housing and support a mission that creates lasting impact for local families.”

Elite Roof and Solar Continues to Grow

We’re also excited to congratulate Elite Roof and Solar on their recent expansion. The company proudly announced the grand opening of its newest office in Columbia, South Carolina, marking a significant milestone in their continued growth and commitment to serving homeowners and businesses across both North Carolina and South Carolina.

This partnership between Elite Roof and Solar and Davidson Housing Coalition demonstrates exactly what we hope to foster at the Hurt Hub – meaningful relationships that benefit our entire community. If you want to learn more about our coworking community at the Hurt Hub please visit this link
